The Tower: Half Good News

“Approved but not funded.”

The good part of the tower news is that restoration of the Burnt Coat Harbor light tower is now on Maine Department of Transportation’s list of approved projects. This is really excellent news, as there are not many opportunities for grants of this kind. The less-good part of the news is that no funds are available this year or next, and that the next chance for funding will be 2016.

Background. For the past several years, we have been looking for grant money to restore the light tower. It looks sturdy – but time and weather have taken their toll. You can see the rust around the light platform. Other damage, not so obvious, also urgently needs repair.

We presently have in process an engineering study, by Resurgence Engineering of Portland, to provide a detailed plan for tower restoration, when money becomes available. In the meantime, the plan will include recommendations for protecting against further deterioration. We will be working on that, and also possibly on other parts of the plan, while we wait to hear further from the Department of Transportation.
